LOCAL AREA AROUND THE
FRENCH HOLIDAY HOME
THE VILLAGE OF MAYREVILLE
Hardly a village, a hamlet rather, with a total of 8 families, all farmers, and all very friendly. Although they are used to visitors they do not speak English.
The French holiday home is situated in the square, next to the Mairie and opposite the church. The square is partly grassed and children can play there in safety. The church and the adjacent 15th century, timber framed, property, (now sadly in ruins) illustrate the antiquity of the village.

THE LOCAL TOWN OF MIREPOIX
A gem of a small town whose main feature is its medieval timber arches - not to be missed. Go there early on market day (Monday) and shop for local produce; fruit and vegetables, cheeses, honey, poultry, and eggs or just sit outside one of the cafés enjoying the sight of other people at their daily occupations. Don't be late however - the Market finishes at noon.

THE TOWN AND CITÉ OF
CARCASSONNE
This historic and romantic town is the principal one of the department. The cité, a fortified enclosure surrounded by a moat and entered via a drawbridge, can be recognised from afar by its many pointed turrets. It was remodelled in the 19th century on a medieval original.
There are spectacular firework displays on July 14th and at other times throughout the summer, and re-enactments of historical events also form part of the summer seasons' entertainment. The 'new' town, about 15 minutes walk from the cité is a walled town with narrow streets and squares teeming with restaurants, bars and shops typical of a French provincial town.
